A one day tutorial on Crowd & Computing organised by http://cloudsummerschool.com
The main focus will be on Crowd computing technologies and how they can be integrated into Citizen Science Platforms. Topics include: BOINC, XtreemFS Cloud Files system, sensor Cloud computing, Big Data integration in Citizen Science platforms and others. We will bring in a leading expert on each topic.
The Tutorial is organised by the Cloud Summerschool Almere.
The old, the new, and the ugly
Crowd computing is new and exciting. Heating your home and helping science and the same time. Integrating Crowd computing technology into Citizen Science projects. Creating your own supercomputer from Raspberry Pi boards.
To create these new things, there is new technology, however, there is still "old" proven software that underpins some of the largest computing infrastructures in the world. Volunteer Desktop Grids, as these are called, are in existence for some 20 years now, providing scientists with 100.000nds of computers at their finger tips.
New technologies have come up in recent years: Cloud computing, Virtualisation, Docker, inexpensive computer boards (Raspberry Pi). Software has matured with all kinds of distributed computing middleware, cloud file systems, big data analysis tools.
And then there are the ugly. As soon as you set up a Crowd computing infrastructure and hook it up to the Internet, they will come. You may not notice them at once, but if you set up a distributed computing system and hook it up to the internet, they will be there: the hackers, the script kiddies, the bot net creators. It's important to keep it in mind when you set up a Crowd computer. Either do not connect it to the Internet or take some security measures.
The tutorial will consist of theory and hands-on sessions.

An overview of the area, and technologies
- Setting up a Crowd computer based on Desktop Grid technology that can be used for compute work inside Citizen science projects
- Setting up a distributed Cloud file system that can be used to share data inside Citizen science projects. We use XtreemFS technology
- Green IT aspects of Crowd computing
- In the hands-on session we will put everything together and create a Crowd computer based on Raspberry Pi computers. You will install compute and data software on a Raspberry Pi, and we will link them all up into one Crowd computer.
Everyone interested in Crowd computing technology and how it can be applied in volunteer computing or Citizen Science.
Some experience with Linux systems would be nice. If you do not have that we will team you up with someone who has during the hands-on session.
